30 to 40 ticks. That was the entire basis of how I read Gold for over a year, no clock involved. Two strategies came out of that one idea. One is dead. One I still trade every week, right now, in live prop evaluations.
I used to trade Spooky Dark Matter on Gold using 30 to 40 tick range bars, not time-based candles. Not a charting preference. A deliberate bet against how manipulation actually works.
Time-based edges are real. I am not disputing that. But time is also where manipulation lives. A 1-minute candle closes at a moment every liquidity provider and algo on the other side of your trade knows in advance. Predictable timing is exploitable timing.
Range bars remove the clock. A new candle only forms once price has actually moved 30 to 40 ticks, not because 60 seconds passed. You are reading what price did, not what the clock allowed it to do inside a fixed window.
That was the theory. What I found was not something I set out to prove. Dark Matter and Range Footprint, my order-flow read, both traded cleaner on tick range bars than on time-based charts.
This is old enough now that I do not have the exact numbers to show you. Take it as the working theory I traded on at the time, not a backtest I can hand you.
Dark Matter is retired. It is a staggered take-profit, mean-reversion style, and it worked well when Gold was in a continual, gentle uptrend. That regime ended.
It is not running for me anymore, not because the theory failed, but because I have not tested it against what Gold is actually doing now. I also have not shopped it around other tickers properly, so it may well be genuinely good elsewhere. I just do not know, and I would rather tell you that than pretend I do.
These days I run a fixed 1R IB50 system instead. Less clever. More reliable. At this stage, simplicity won.
Range Footprint did not retire. I still use it, today, on the speedpass stage of my prop evaluations, a 0.5R system at full size across accounts.
The specifics of how are already written up free on the marketplace, in Trading the Prop, Not the Chart.
The theory is free. If you want the exact method and which prop firms it is built around, message me on X.
